March 9th Possible Structure Fire

Liberty Township Fire Department was dispatched to a possible structure fire. Smoke was coming from the vents and was in the building. The smoke resulted from a malfunctioning furnace with a frozen fan. As a precaution, SCBAs were worn, hoses deployed, and port-a-tank was dropped. Ventilation fans were used to vent the smoke out of the building. Because of the Findlay 2009 flood, alternate routes had to be used to arrive at the scene, which included the interstate. Allen Township and HANCO EMS were on standby. (After the initial response, there is not much activity by camera).

Organizational Structure: A Case Study of Indigo Books and Music

Several factors work in concert to bring about the success of any great organization. The most obvious and major factors include: the leadership style, a great vision and mission, personality and charisma, a good workforce and a unifying organizational culture, an excellent product or service, exceptional customer service, the right strategy and plans, technology and a unique organizational design  (Daft, 2007). This term paper looks into the organizational design, which is the overall set of structural elements used to manage the total organization and the relationship of these elements, as a foundation to build upon as the organization strives to greatness. The paper will focus on the Books and Music that was formed in 2001 as a result of a merger of the two largest book stores in Canada- Chapters and indigo. The smaller of the two, Indigo, bought 50.1% of Chapters' shares in February 2001 amidst protestation of the latter's board of directors. During the course of 2001 Indigo slowly but sure acquired more Chapters' shares completing the takeover at the end of the same year. The merger of the two companies obviously presented major challenges to the management of the new outfit especially with regard to organizational design and structure. This paper will particularly evaluate the structural issues to be addressed in the merger of two companies, the role of organizational structure in the efficiency and effectiveness of an organization, the appropriateness of a mechanistic or organic structure for indigo and the effect of technology on indigo's organizational design. The paper will address the above mentioned issues from a broad perspective with the Indigo Books and Music providing specific examples for clarification and elaboration.

Building Information Modeling (Bim) By Using Revit Structure

Structural engineers will find several opportunities to utilize Revit Structure to collaborate with architects using the intelligent building objects (in DWG format)from AutoCAD Architecture.
There is one important part of structural engineer’s profession to share design data and information with the rest of design team jointly with the architect. For this Revit Structure provides a wide range of collaboration modes like:

And for better management with architects and rest of the team, Revit Structure exports structural members as intelligent building objects resident to AutoCAD Architecture. So a full structural model can be shared directly with the architect using AutoCAD Architecture - allowing the architect to examine structural design inside the architectural model and test for possible clash with architectural components directly inside AutoCAD Architecture.

Why Structure is so Important for Adults With Add

Many adults with attention deficit disorder (ADD) struggle with the same challenges. One of the biggest challenges faced by ADD adults is creating and implementing structure in their lives.





Life without structure can be chaotic and overwhelming. As an adult with ADD, you probably don't need rigid structure, but some general guidelines to help order your day, your week, or even your month.





When you find structure that works for you and you stick to it, structure takes the pressure off. It allows you to go through your day without having to make too many decisions about what to do or when.





So if structure is so helpful for adults with ADD, why is it so difficult for us to create it for ourselves? Well, when you have a tendency to become overwhelmed with the details of day-to-day life in the way that adults with ADD so often do, creating structure is a skill that doesn't come easily. It must be learned, often in adulthood.





And, as with learning any skill, the best way to build structure into your life is to do it slowly. I suggest starting with a bedtime routine. In this case, it's easiest to work backwards:





1. Determine the best time for you to go to sleep each night. Choose a time that will allow you to get a full night's rest. Let's use an example to demonstrate, and say 11:00pm.





2. Next, take some time to "get ready for bed." That might mean brushing your teeth, getting your clothes ready for the next day, taking medications, or whatever it is that you do before you go to sleep. If these activities take about 15 minutes, then you would begin getting ready for bed at 10:45pm.





3. Finally, pick a few "wind down" activities that will help you relax and de-stress. This might include taking a bath, reading, meditating, journaling, or even watching television--provided the shows you choose aren't intense. Spend about an hour winding down and allowing your brain to slow down so that it's not racing when you're trying to fall asleep. In the example provided here, you would start winding down around 9:45 or 10:00pm.





Note: Whatever activities you choose to wind down, make sure they don't involve the computer! Nothing will wake up the ADD brain faster than email or the Internet.





After you build structure into your evening and find yourself comfortably sticking to it, you can begin to build more structure into your day. Until then, bedtime is a great place to start!





And don't be discouraged if it takes a while to make this routine stick. You may need to tweak the times and activities to suit you, and you may experience some trial and error along the way.

World's Tallest Man-Made Structure

Dubai gets known worldwide not only due to its modern infrastructure, but also because of the marvelous building feats it periodically keeps on taking up. The world's first ever seven star hotel got erected upon and established only on Dubai's shores. One of the most exciting Marinas of today's time is also being developed across the same sea front these days; another feather in a long list of Dubai's landmarks. There is more to talk about nowadays though, as the world's tallest building is also getting shaped up at the same location now. The soaring tower, named Burj Dubai, has some amazing stats and facts to speak of. Some of these are being listed and discussed below.

The tower is about to be built in the middle of a man-made lake, which when filled with water will provide the architecture a picturesque setting. The building will carry some influences of the Islamic architecture as well so as to keep Dubai's heritage alive. For example the triple-lobed footprint of the building is stated to be based on an Arabian flower. At the same time, some onion shaped domes are also being made part of the building's exteriors. Developers are no doubt aiming to provide this latest of Dubai's landmarks with a blend of the modern and Islamic outlooks both.

According to the plans, a public observation area and a private club are expected to get located at the building's top. Initially designed to have three decker elevators, the building will now carry only two decker elevators when completed in 2008. The last of the residential apartments will be constructed at the floor number 109th, while an observation area will be made available to the public on 124th. The whole structure is to be rotated about 20 degrees so as to make it withstand the stress being caused due to the Arabian sea winds. The plinth of tower goes 50 meters below the earth's surface, with a staggering amount of steel and up to 45,000 cubic meters of concrete dumped in there.

Despite Burj Dubai's external similarities with that of the Sears Tower, it stands way different in the structural terms. The building's earlier plans involved getting designs borrowed from Grollo Tower, which was proposed several years back at Melbourne. However, it subsequently got replaced by Skidmore Owings & Merrill with the present structure. Burj Dubai will not only be the tallest building, but also the tallest man-made structure, when fully completed. The total number of floors expected are around 162. There is no word on the building's final height as of now, but it might stay around the 800 meters mark.

Dubai's economic clout has been rising rapidly in the recent years, and the projects like Burj Dubai are just a testimony to the same phenomenon. The world's tallest man-made structure, as they might call it, would only be an addition to the list of so many landmarks already built there. There seems to be no end of Dubai's dreams now, as its skyline gets crowded with each passing moment.

Raised Bed Gardening - Building the Structure

The purpose of constructing a raised bed garden can be varied; adding visual interest to the landscaping, reducing the amount of bending and stooping required as you tend to your garden, and providing an optimal growing environment where soil conditions are less than ideal.

To begin your raised bed garden, the first step is to decide the dimensions you would prefer. Probably the most widely used depth dimension used is four feet (48"). A bed this deep is accessible from both sides without an inconvenient spot in the middle. Also, if you are using lumber in the construction, it is widely available in 4 foot lengths which will reduce the amount of cutting and waste.

Tip: If your bed is not going to be accessible from both sides, you should limit the depth to no more than three feet (36") to be sure you can get to all parts of the bed.

The length of your new bed is not critical except as to how it fits visually into the overall landscape and the cost of construction materials. That said, beds should not be too long. Feet and garden equipment should be kept out of the bed as much as possible to avoid compacting the soil.

As an example, if your plan calls for a bed forty feet long, it is a good idea to construct two beds 19 feet long with a two foot pathway in between. This arrangement will also save you a great many steps as you tend your raised bed garden.

How high you raise the bed will depend mostly on you. Factors to keep in mind are that most plants require a minimum rooting zone of between 6 and 12 inches and deeper is better. Also, the higher you build your retaining structure, the more attention must be paid to foundations, bracing, and supports which increase both the cost and the complexity of the project.

Dimensional lumber such as 2X8s can easily be held in place using rot resistant stakes on the inside of the structure and attached with screws.

Structure And Building Waterproofing - Keep Your Building And Investment Safe From Water Damage

The concept of waterproofing or protecting buildings against the damaging action of water derives from the need to avoid water and humidity related elements that act negatively upon constructions. This negative effect can present itself in several ways, creating health problems, structure deterioration, facility damage and others. Not to mention, that repairing a building damaged by water can be very expensive!

Permeability most frequent causes are: porous or flawed material, badly sealed splices, crack existence, building defects and inadequate surface pendant.

- Surface waterproofing: done with coating plates, bituminous emulsions, vinyl pastes, resins and sealants.

- Integral waterproofing: integrated to the mass of concrete, affecting its permeability.

- Hydrophanous waterproofing: integrated to the mixing water or used as curing systems, allow the improvement of concrete's characteristics such as workability, compression resistance, decrease of reinforcement steel corrosion, decrease of fissures and cracks, and extended durability.

Kinds of Waterproofing

- Rigid waterproofing is meant to seal filtrations, make waterproof concrete structures or waterproof coatings. Treatments for rigid waterproofing generally are: concrete and cement integral additives, and cement, epoxic, plastic, or metallic coatings.

- Flexible Waterproofing is intended for structures affected by temperature changes and water settlements. This kind of waterproofing is a protection capable of absorbing movements without suffering damages that could allow water access. Flexible treatments are membranes, hot asphalts, cold asphalts (based in water or solvent), polymer emulsions, vinyl emulsions, and acrylic emulsions.

To fit your particular needs, you will probably need to use one or a combination of the above kinds and systems of building waterproofing. The best way to go is to ask an expert in your area to help you find the best solution for your building.

Concrete Foundation Repair - What You Need to Know to Keep Your Structure Strong

There are a number of instances where a concrete foundation repair is necessary in order to maintain the structural integrity of a building.

These could be a partial collapse of the building, as a result of water intrusion or an earthquake, or damages caused by overloading a structural deck or slab, or a failure of the foundation due to an improper installation.

In any instance where it appears the concrete footings need to be repaired, a detailed evaluation of the problem, followed by repair recommendations from a structural engineer, is the first step.

Most likely, the building or structure exhibited some signs, or there were indications that pointed to a problem with the concrete foundation.

Typical signs could be a sagging roof line, cracks in the plaster or stucco, or the building is unstable under certain loads.

In the worst-case scenario, a building might be red-tagged, and the inhabitants would have to vacate until the building inspector released the building as safe.

Once the structural engineer has generated a set of repair plans, a licensed concrete contractor will be employed to perform the repairs.

The contractor will start by excavating in order to expose the damaged sections of the foundation, and depending on the extent of the repairs, shoring may be needed to support one, or more sections of the building while the repairs are accomplished.

With the shoring in place, the damaged foundations can be removed using a jack hammer, or heavy equipment if necessary.

A typical concrete foundation repair will include embed rebar dowels, that are installed into the adjacent, undamaged concrete using a commercial, two-part epoxy.

Depending on the type of concrete foundation that's in place, it may be necessary to cut the adjacent concrete slab in order to remove the damaged section of foundation.

A smooth saw cut will allow for embed dowels to be installed per the engineer's specifications.

In addition, the repair will require embed dowels at either end of existing foundation.

The next step will be to install forms for the new section of foundation, and install the steel rebar in the footing.

The rebar is either tied or welded to the dowels to form the continuous reinforcing system.

Once the forms and rebar have been inspected, the foundation concrete can be poured in place, and the anchor bolts and structural hold-downs can be located in the fresh concrete.

When the concrete has initially set, the forms can be stripped and the excavation can be hand back-filled.

However, the back-fill cannot be compacted until the concrete has cured to a specified strength.

With many commercial buildings, samples of the concrete are sent to a lab for testing, and the test reports will indicate at what point the concrete foundation will sustain a load.

When the concrete has achieved the specified strength, the back-fill can be compacted, and any walls or other parts of the structure that were removed can be replaced.
