Techniques For Photographing Buildings

There are incredible single structure buildings throughout our country, and the world, that are perfect subjects for photographers. The reflection of a city's nighttime skyline reflecting in its river makes an absolutely beautiful picture. You can photograph one building or an entire skyline, and no two pictures will turn out the same, if you vary the approach to your subjects, photograph the unique, vary your images by shooting at times in black and white, shoot at different times of day, and in different types of weather. A stormy day can add a lot of character to an image.

You can't get much more unique than the headquarters for the Longaberger Company located in Newark, Ohio. Dave Longaberger decided it would be a great idea to have the corporate office building designed and built to represent their product, baskets. That's right, he wanted their office building to be in the shape of a giant basket. And, even though most people didn't take him seriously, his dream was realized on December 17, 1997. Shaped like a double-handled basket, it's one of the world's most creative buildings. So, if you're in Newark, Ohio, don't miss the opportunity to add the Longaberger building to your collection of unique photographs. Take your camera bag and photograph it from several angles to get the full, incredible effect so you can amaze your friends and family.

There are few buildings more intriguing than a lighthouse. These are truly some of the most beautiful structures available to photograph anywhere in the world. The east coast of the United States is peppered with many lighthouses of all shapes, sizes, and colors. Some are still functioning, although the days of wick trimming and oil filling have long since passed. Some are occupied as residences, some are abandoned, some are even romantic Bed and Breakfasts. There are lighthouses you can easily drive to and those you can't get to without a boat.

Maine has over 60 lighthouses and there are a few that get more than there share of photographic attention. But, there is one that stands out as being constantly photographed, rain or shine. It's the Cape Neddick Lighthouse, near the entrance to the York River at the north end of Long Beach near York, Maine. The lighthouse is still an active aid to navigation and the building and grounds are not open to the public. But, if you take your camera bag and equipment to nearby Sohier Park, you can get some awesome shots of this majestic structure that has been standing since 1879.

Nubble Light, which it's also known as, is beautiful to photograph all year-round. You can unpack your camera bag in the park and spend the day taking shots of the lighthouse as the light changes and casts different shadows and illuminates it until the sun begins to set. A magical time to visit is during the holidays. The Saturday after Thanksgiving the lighthouse is decorated with hundreds of white lights. It is a breathtaking view through the lens of your camera. And, the pictures you get would make beautiful Christmas cards.

Every city and town has their own uniqueness. There are structures in your town you probably haven't really looked at as you would through the eyes of a tourist. New buildings, old buildings, buildings that are falling down all have a quality that when caught on film, tell a story. So take your camera bag, pack you tripod and other accessories and go out and look for the unique, the beautiful buildings that are just around the corner.

Masonry Restoration Techniques For Your Historic Building

New masonry buildings rarely are built the way they used to be and we should preserve and maintain our older masonry structures, because like the saying goes "they don't build them like they used too" is very true in the masonry business. Very rarely do you see large all real stone buildings being built anymore just because of the high cost of real stone and the amount of labor involved in laying very large stones. If you have an old masonry structure that's need to be restored there are many steps you must take to repair and restore it. Old Masonry Structures made of real stone and antique brick are very rarely built anymore and to preserve what is left it must be maintained.

The first thing you should do is thoroughly clean the surface with a soft acid wash and a pressure washer. You must be careful not to add to much acid to your solution to ensure you do not damage the brick or stone. You should then scrub with a firm bristle scrub brush to remove all the loose dirt. If you are skilled with a pressure washer this would also work, you just must be real careful not to damage the surface with the high pressure water stream.

The next thing that you may need to do is a good tuckpointing job on the entire surface. You really should do the whole wall or structure because if you just grind out the bad areas you will notice a difference in the color of the patched areas. Doing the whole surface will ensure a quality job that matches entirely and odds are anyways you will have to eventually tuckpoint the other areas as well further down the road anyways.

While you are tuckpointing you should also remove any replace any broken or missing masonry units as well. you should really do the replacement work as you go so your mortar color stays consistent with the surrounding mortar joints. Bad masonry units are one that are cracked, spalling or just plain falling apart. Special care must also be taken at the caps of masonry walls if they are capped with concrete or stone, this is the first line of defense from water damage and deterioration. If the cap has been compromised your wall can quickly be destroyed from the elements of rain, snow and ice.

On really bad crumbling walls they may need to be reinforced with wall anchors that are drilled in with a metal anchor bolt set in a special epoxy to hold it in place.. Other techniques such as wall reinforce with galvanized mesh must also be implemented for crumbling stucco walls. Other things that may need replacement are steel lentils over windows and doors. These can be especially dangerous if not properly reinforced and braced up during replacement.

Restoring our old masonry structures is very important in preserving our historic buildings and should only be attempted by skilled tradesmen that have been in the masonry field for a very long time. If you have a building you would like to restore do not wait long to restore it, the longer you wait the more damage it will absorb and it will cost you more later than sooner so don't wait, get it fixed now and not later.

Three Campfire Building Techniques

If you plan to take a family camping vacation trip this year then it's a good bet you and everyone else in the family are really looking forward to building a fantastic campfire. Not everyone knows the best ways to build a campfire though, so here are three simple and easy techniques that will make your campfire a raging success.

Keeping your campfire safe should always be your first priority when taking a family camping trip. This is particularly important if you are camping in remote or disbursed campground areas, and it is critical when camping in high fire areas such as those scattered across the desert southwestern area of the United States.

To ensure staying safe with your campfire, be sure to clear a wide area of any dry brush that might easily catch fire from a stray ember. Being a small pit to put your fire and will help it stay safe, as will surrounding it with rocks and stones.

Once you're ready to build your campfire, it helps to know the most effective techniques for both getting it lit, and keeping it going long into the night.

The first type of campfire you can build is often referred to as a teepee fire. This type of campfire got its name because you will be arranging the sticks and firewood in a pointed teepee type structure. First you need to make a small pile of kindling in the center of your fire circle. Then stand up numerous sticks in a circular pattern all leaning against each other at the top similar to the tepee. Like the kindling that is in the middle at the bottom and as it catches fire to flames will rise up and like the sticks that are arranged around it to.

Another excellent way to create a campfire is by building a blog cabin type structure with your sticks instead. To make a log cabin style campfire, you also start with a small bit of kindling in the middle of your fire circle. Make sure you have enough to get a good strong flame burning. Now lay out your sticks and small branches in a square shape surrounding the kindling pile. This creates a box like structure, which sort of resembles an old-fashioned log cabin. When you light the kindling pile in the center, the flames from that will extend to the small walls of twigs and branches you have created.

A third way to make an excellent campfire is to create a wagon wheel shape. Just like the previous two methods, you will first create a pile of small flammable kindling in the center of your fire pit. With this campfire design you will lay your larger sticks and twigs across the top and center of kindling pile. Continue adding additional twigs and branches all the way around so that you have a spoked wheel type shape in the center of your fire pit.

These are all simple, easy, and very effective ways to build a campfire very quickly. Not only will your fire light easily, but it will also get the right mixture of wood and oxygen to continue burning nicely as long as you would like.
