Masonry Restoration Techniques For Your Historic Building

New masonry buildings rarely are built the way they used to be and we should preserve and maintain our older masonry structures, because like the saying goes "they don't build them like they used too" is very true in the masonry business. The first thing you should do is thoroughly clean the surface with a soft acid wash and a pressure washer. If you are skilled with a pressure washer this would also work, you just must be real careful not to damage the surface with the high pressure water stream.

The next thing that you may need to do is a good tuckpointing job on the entire surface. You really should do the whole wall or structure because if you just grind out the bad areas you will notice a difference in the color of the patched areas. Doing the whole surface will ensure a quality job that matches entirely and odds are anyways you will have to eventually tuckpoint the other areas as well further down the road anyways.

Other techniques such as wall reinforce with galvanized mesh must also be implemented for crumbling stucco walls. Other things that may need replacement are steel lentils over windows and doors. These can be especially dangerous if not properly reinforced and braced up during replacement.

Restoring our old masonry structures is very important in preserving our historic buildings and should only be attempted by skilled tradesmen that have been in the masonry field for a very long time. If you have a building you would like to restore do not wait long to restore it, the longer you wait the more damage it will absorb and it will cost you more later than sooner so don't wait, get it fixed now and not later.

How to Repair Cracks on Masonry Wall

Masonry walls are used in constructing buildings, boundaries and many other structures on site. This constitutes of blocking materials to erect walls. In the course of construction or after cracks may appear on the walls. This have to be corrected in order to have a stable structure. This can be caused by use of different materials with varying strengths. The other reason may be due to differential settlement of the building structure in the foundations.

When repairing cracks on a masonry wall, the type of structure must be taken into consideration. This is because the wall maybe non load bearing or load bearing. For the load bearing ones, its critical to access the level of cracking. The structure is checked from the floor level to the roof ring beam. This will ensure that all stones on the fault line are identified. In non the load bearing, assessment is done and correction is done superficially.

The repair of cracks in masonry walls commences by raking out the mortar or plaster. This is done to a depth of two inches. All vertical and horizontal joints are exposed along the fault line. Hoop Iron is then cut and laid course wise. The strip is placed at the deepest end of the joint. It is placed on top of the crack one block length on both sides. For severe damage, each course is raked out. A steel bar is used of minimum ten millimeters diameter.

When the crack in masonry is being repaired, rich concrete is added to the joint. After the concrete slurry fills the joint, it is allowed to dry for one day. The wall is then plastered again. the plaster mix should not exceed one part cement and two parts sand. This is to balance the material strengths to avoid cracking again on plaster. After the plaster is completed, it is allowed to dry. It should be cured for two weeks before any decorations.

How Far is Masonry Veneer Used in the Construction Process?

A thin covering which gives an attractive appearance on application and that which conceals the real appearance or true nature of the object or building is called veneer. The materials which are often used for making veneer are wood and stone (it might be either a natural stone or field stone). Most of the veneers are constructed using stone, because stones have unique beauty on their own and one such veneer, which makes use of stones and bricks are masonry veneer.

- It is constructed using thin pieces of brick or stone and it is supported using an air space.

Anyhow, the strength of the masonry wall is not totally dependent upon the bond of the building material and the mortar, the friction that exists between the interlocking blocks of masonry provides enough strength on its own. Sometimes, some grooves might be present in the blocks, which improve the interlocking of the blocks.

5. These two systems are used for construction on taking into consideration the design of the building and other wind-related risk factors.

6. The exterior walls are constructed using masonry veneer and mortar. To give support to the wall, stones are used depending on the type used.

7. As already pointed out, it is self-supportive and it does not require any backer board.
