Burj Dubai / Burj Khalifa grand opening

A video of my view of the launch of the Burj Dubai or "Burj Khalifa" as it is now called - complete with music, audience sounds, etc.. The tower has been revealed to be 828meters high - the tallest man-made structure on Earth. The building is so huge, I simply could not fit in the dancing fountains (also World's biggest) and the lower fireworks which you will hear as they build the atmosphere prior to the show. Skip to 3m25secs if you just want the action! Hard to describe the amazing atmosphere - the whole Downtown Burj area was completely rammed with excited people. Thousands of residents and tourists crowded today around the tapering half-mile high tower, which stands at least 160 stories high. Dubai's hereditary ruler unveiled a plaque at the tower's base, kicking off inaugural festivities that included traditional Gulf Arab dance performances and skydivers landing parachutes emblazoned with the colors of the United Arab Emirates flag near the tower's base. Dubai on Monday officially inaugurated the centerpiece of its decade-long construction boom, with the surprise revelation that the world-beating 168-story skyscraper -- seen by some as a symbol of the city's economic excess -- was even bigger than previously thought. In a glitzy firework-lit ceremony, the city-state's ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum unveiled a plaque commemorating the event and also announced that the $1.5 billion structure has a new name: the Burj Khalifa. Named after Khalifa Bin Zayed, the president of the United Arab Emirates -- and ruler of Abu Dhabi, which recently bailed out debt-ridden Dubai to the tune of $10 billion -- the tower was officially recorded as 828 meters tall, adding 10 meters on to previous height claims.
