Team Building Events Evolving in 2010

When companies try to improve productivity in the office these days they often try to book a team building event. Strangely it hasn't always been like this and team building was a concept that originally came from the United States of America.

Although various forms of team bonding events had taken place over the years it wasn't until the decade of the 1990's that the companies adopted the more usual form of team building that we are all accustomed to these days. That involves the whole team taking time out of the office to work on a series of issues or problems aimed at establishing growth and development within the individuals and company as a whole.

Most of these events follow a similar format, removing people from their usual office environment and placing them in a protected environment where they are then put through a series of tests and games to help promote unity as a team and develop skills as individuals. There have been a number of great successes with this format and many individuals who are normally quiet, timid and shy in the office develop new skills that help to benefit the company as a whole.

However, just like everything else, the format of team building needs to evolve to keep it fresh, exciting and entertaining to the individuals who take part in the events. People need to know that when they are booked on to a team building event that they will be learning something new. Most people have gone through several team building events over the course of the last ten years and if I'm honest I haven't seen a lot of variation in the format that companies are using to motivate and create growth in their staff.

Thankfully there are a number of companies out there that have taken it upon themselves to evolve the format of the team building structure. With the amount of events that we have at our disposable these days there is really no reason why these companies shouldn't experiment with new events and things.

Bungee jumping, river crossing, planting trees; it really can be anything from the most exciting and dynamic activity in the world to something quite docile, as long as the format is kept fresh then most companies can integrate the learning aspect into the course.

So the next time your boss comes in and mentions that you are going away on a team bonding event, don't instantly assume that it will be the same old boring format that you have always been on, you could just get a surprise.
